Report to your local newspaper.  If someone has found your dog some of the local papers advertise free ‘found’

Dogs disappear because:

• They escape from their owners and get picked up by people assuming they are lost or homeless.

• People target a dog and steal the animal from a garden, from outside of a shop or from a car.

All of the above reasons are regarded of theft unless reported to the Dog Warden as a ‘found’ dog.

Since the introduction in ………… of the ‘Cleaner, Safer Neighbourhood Bill”, the responsibility for lost and found dogs has been transferred from the Police to Local Dog Wardens.

Contact the Dog Warden as soon as possible after your dog goes missing. If you suspect the dog has been stolen, you must also telephone the police to get a crime number.

Many dogs are never tracked down as Dog Wardens in neighbouring councils do not communicate with each other, therefore you need to contact as many agencies as possible. Do not rely on the Dog Warden to find your dog.

Dog Wardens take dogs to council pounds. After seven days a dog can be sold and re-homed.
Dogs can be removed by a rescue centre which is not necessarily in the same area. If none of these options are available then the dog is destroyed.

It is the Local Authority (Council) who is responsible for found dogs, for assistance you need to contact the Local Authority for the geographical area where you found the dog.

Although the Local Authority has a mandatory responsibility for found dogs, each one operates in its own way, some have drop-off points (kennels and vets) whilst others will collect from you.

Some Police stations will take the dog from you and hold it until the Local Authority dog warden collects it, but this is unusual.

The RSPCA does not cater for found dogs.

In all likelihood you will have to hold onto the dog for a short while, once you have found a dog you have a duty of care to look after it.

Each Local Authority has to keep a dog register of all the dogs they have seized so that owners can be reunited with them, if you have lost a dog this is a good place to start to find it, dont be fobbed off, by law they have to keep a list.

Responsible Dog Ownership

Being a responsible dog owner means:

Taking your dog to the vet if it is sick or injured.

Making sure your dog in wearing a collar, identification tag and is micro chipped – with all details kept up to date.

Taking your dog to be vaccinated annually.

In addition to the above, a responsible owner will:

Make sure their dog feels secure, loved and has a daily routine.

Exercise their dogs twice a day regardless of the weather.

Always carry poo bags

Provide a balanced nutritious diet.

Provide clean fresh drinking water.

Provide their pet with a quiet, draught free bed out of direct sunlight.

Vacuum/launder their dog’s bed to keep smells and fleas at bay.

Consider taking their dog to training classes to allow the dog to socialize in a controlled environment,

BSL stands for Breed Specific Legislation. It is the banning or stricter restrictions being made on specific breeds in certain areas. It’s a HUGE concern for pit bull owners.

Gifts in wills, also known as legacies, are a really important source of income for charities in the UK.  They tend to be of a higher value than one-off donations and also help charities with their long-term planning, especially if they’ve been notified of intent beforehand.  As gifts to charities are exempt from inheritance tax, this can be a particularly tax-efficient way to not only benefit the causes you care for, but will also reduce the amount of inheritance tax payable after your death, which also helps your other beneficiaries.

Supporting your chosen charity during your lifetime is one thing, but making a statement that you’re going to support them afterwards can really deepen the bond between you and your cause. Don’t forget to let your chosen charity know that you have decided to provide for them in your Will.  This will not only help them plan for the future but also they will be able to thank you for your generosity and keep you informed of current projects.

Legacies can be separated into three categories:

•     A pecuniary legacy:  a gift of a specific sum of money.

•     A specific legacy:  a gift of a particular named item.

•     A residuary legacy:  a fraction or all of the remaining part of your estate once your family and friends have been provided for.

Once you have decided which charity you would like to leave a legacy to and what sort of gift you would like to make, it is time to put your wishes down in writing and see a solicitor to make your Will.  If you have already provided for your family and friends by making a Will, but would like to alter it to include a gift to charity, you can do so by drawing up a codicil.  It is recommended that you contact your solicitor to incorporate the codicil into your Will as the document is not legally binding on its own.

It is important that the details of your charity are correctly written in your Will; any errors might mean that your charity won’t receive your gift.

Make sure to include the charity’s name, full address and Registered Charity Number.
